Santa Cruz hardcore band Drain have announced their third album, …Is Your Friend, due November 7 via Epitaph. We’ve got an exclusive “patina rust splash” vinyl variant up for pre-order now in the BV shop, limited to 500. Here’s a mock-up:
The album was produced by Jon Markson, who mixed Drain’s previous album Living Proof, and it was fully tracked live with no metronome. Vocalist Sammy Ciaramitaro says the album title is a reference to the band’s founding ethos, the thing that’s made them so approachable and widely-appealing despite having some gut-punchingly heavy songs: “DRAIN is your friend, DRAIN was your friend, DRAIN will forever be your friend.”
The first single is “Nights Like These,” a trademark groove-based Drain anthem inspired by the highs of a great hardcore show that Drain get to experience every night on tour. Sammy says:
“Over the last decade of doing DRAIN, I’ve been able to see the world, meet incredible people, experience all sorts of incredible highs and even a couple of lows – but most importantly, I got to do all of those things with my best friends. No matter how much we accomplish and how big we grow – we are still just a couple of friends who get to play music together, make memories all over the world, and we are SO aware of how lucky we are to do it. THAT is what “Nights Like These” is about.
The Derek Rathbun-directed video starts off with footage of a typically-wild Drain show, and then, after an intermission in which Sammy says, “Man, I could do this to forever,” the video fast-forwards to 2055 and depicts Drain doing what they do now, 30 years older, with the members’ actual fathers and uncles portraying them. Sammy continues:
When we were coming up with ideas for this video, I thought it would be so cool to try and make us look old and play a show as seniors. We could have gone the route of using make-up and practical effects, but then it clicked in my brain…I am going to look just like my dad when I get old – I should just use him.
The fact that we got to share this special night with the people who shaped us to be the men we are today – means SO much to all of us. I hope that everyone enjoys watching it as much as we all enjoyed getting to make it happen. Shout out to Stu, Frankie, and Donny!
Drain are set to begin short a tour at Long Island’s Amityville Music Hall on Tuesday (6/10) with All Under Heaven, Victory Garden, and Deadshot; and that surrounds their appearance at the DC edition of Warped Tour. They also play the Long Beach and Orlando editions, as well as Furnace Fest, Louder Than Life, New England Metal & Hardcore Festival, and more.
Surrounding the fall festivals, Drain are opening Kublai Khan TX‘s tour, alongside Gideon and Guilt Trip, and that includes a show at NJ’s Starland Ballroom on September 21. All dates are listed below.
