Scouting For Girls’ Roy Stride responds to insult from Noel Gallagher: “He was like a God”

Oasis' Noel Gallagher and Scouting For Girls’ Roy Stride

Scouting For Girls‘ Roy Stride has responded to a past insult from Noel Gallagher, saying he “was like a God” to him at one point.

Back in 2008, the Oasis legend spoke to BBC Newsbeat and gave his brutal verdict on a handful of artists, including Amy WinehouseMark Ronson, Kaiser Chiefs and Scouting for Girls – whose name he changed to “Scouting For Idiots”.

When recently asked by Contact Music if he ever returned the barb, frontman Stride said he would “never” retaliate.

“He was like a God,” he said of Noel. “Did it hurt? Not really. I never heard it. My wife heard it live on radio because I think he said it on Radio 1, but she was like, ‘Oh, he basically sounded like he’d been out all night and he came in, and was just reviewing every single band, and he was just saying that about every band’.”

Indeed, Noel had compared the late Winehouse to a “destitute horse” at the time, and joked that her collaborator Ronson had “ruined” many of his peers’ careers. “He wants to write his own tunes instead of ruining everyone else’s,” he said. “Mark Ronson needs to learn three chords on the guitar and write a tune.”

Stride went on to say he had a ticket to see Oasis ahead of their landmark return, but, like thousands of other fans, had trouble with lengthy queues to buy them online.

“I have [a ticket], but I didn’t get it in the original bout,” he said. “I was like, there for eight hours. I spent my entire day in a bad hotel room trying to get tickets. But I’ve since managed to get one because I’m currently in LA and so I’ve got one for the Rose Bowl in California, which is going to be quite a mad thing, because I can’t imagine seeing Oasis in California.”

Their reunion will kick off with a run of UK and Ireland dates with Richard Ashcroft and Cast, including seven dates at London’s Wembley Stadium. They will later head to  stadiums across North AmericaSouth AmericaAustralia and Asia.

Last month, Noel and the rumoured live band line-up – which was previously revealed to NME by a source close to the shows – were photographed entering a London studio where they reportedly rehearsed for six hours ahead of the run of gigs.

The line-up included Beady Eye alumnus and longtime collaborator Gem Archer, Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs, keyboardist Mikey Rowe, and bassist Andy Bell, who also confirmed he would be returning to the fold. Joe Waronker – believed to be one of the “new faces” that Liam teased back in September – is also rumoured to be joining the tour, but wasn’t photographed.

It is believed that the brothers don’t want to be seen together until July 4, when they kick off their UK tour at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.
