Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster have announced plans for a film adaptation of the 2020 multiplayer paranormal horror video game “Phasmophobia”.
The game sees one to four players work to complete a contract where they must identify the type of ghost haunting a designated site, with several other optional objectives.
Done from a first-person perspective, the horror investigation survival game is inspired by ghost hunting and features twenty-four different ghosts players can deal with.
The game scored good reviews, became the best-selling video game on Steam for several weeks, and was a hit during the pandemic with Twitch streamers and YouTubers having a go. In all, across multiple platforms, it has sold more than 23 million copies globally since its launch.
Produced in association with Kinetic Games Limited, the film adaptation has no distributor, production or release date as yet.
The news was announced at the Business of Fear event in Hollywood on Tuesday, which featured Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum and president Abhijay Prakash as speakers.
