New details have emerged about “Stranger Things: Tales From ’85,” a new animated series spin-off of the major Netflix live-action supernatural hit.
Announced at the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the new show is set “in the stark winter of 1985” in Hawkins, Indiana – between the events of the second and third seasons.
The show’s original characters return here along with a new addition – the mohawk-sporting Nikki – and they take on new monsters and a paranormal mystery.
Appearing at the fest, showrunner Eric Robles compares the tone to the “really dark and really creepy” episodes of 1980s cartoons like “The Real Ghostbusters,” “He-Man and “Dungeons and Dragons”. Visually however it’s quite different. He says:
“The final design landed a world away from those shows, drawing from CGI stylings of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Arcane, the spookiness of the classic Goosebumps book covers, and character designs from Meybis Ruiz Cruz. New monsters, including pumpkins, zombies, and a toothy snow shark, come courtesy of creature designer Carlos Huante.”
Creators Matt and Ross Duffer are executive producing along with Robles, Hilary Leavitt, Shawn Levy, and Dan Cohen. Australia’s Flying Bark is handling the animation.
“Stranger Things: Tales From ’85” will arrive on Netflix in 2026, after the final season of the main show kicks off this November.
