The Chase Sapphire Preferred card underwent a refresh, which was rolled out to new accounts yesterday, and it will be available to existing cardholders from late October.
Existing Ultimate Rewards points earned through late October are worth 1.5 US cents each for 2 years when redeemed through Chase Travel and 1 US cent afterwards.
You can access Chase here.
Chase, however, now has a new Points Boost feature that promises to value points at up to 2 cents each towards select travel, and I will explore those hotels here.
Some of the hotels that you book through Chase Travel are eligible for hotel loyalty program benefits, and you will earn points and stay credits for those.
These are identified on the search, and you can sometimes combine this with The Edit benefits + Points Boost (when things may start making sense).
Chase Sapphire Reserve and Business Reserve members also receive a $250 The Edit credit twice a year, with a minimum 2-night stay. This credit is even more valuable when combined with hotel loyalty program benefits.
It seems that the Points Boost is 2 cents per USD at most, but not at every The Edit Hotels, and 1.75 US cents at other Points Boost eligible properties
Two Night July Stay in Dubai:
SLS Dubai $410
SLS Dubai is eligible for Accor Live Limitless benefits, so you would also earn points for the base price.
You can also use points towards it at 2 cents each. The Edit comes with $100 on-property credit + breakfast for two.
The Ritz-Carlton Dubai
The stay booked at The Edit rate is Marriott Bonvoy qualifying for points and benefits, plus you also receive a $100 on-property credit and breakfast for two.
You can also use points at 2 cents each.
Oaks Liwa Heights Suites
Oaks is a Minor Hotels brand and part of the Global Hotel Alliance.
This property is Points Boost eligible at 1.75 US cents per point (not 2), and you get the GHA Discovery benefits as well. This hotel is not part of the Edit.
JW Marriott Marquis Dubai
This hotel is part of Marriott Bonvoy, but the stay booked through Chase Travel is not eligible for the elite program.
This hotel is also not part of the Edit, so there are no benefits, and the points are worth only 1.75 US cents each.
Beijing
Four Seasons Beijing
You get the usual The Edit benefits of $100 F&B credit + breakfast for two. The hotel is eligible for Points Boost at 2 cents per point.
Four Seasons doesn’t have a guest loyalty program.
Bvlgari Beijing
Not sure what is going on here? Chase Travel states that this stay would be Marriott Bonvoy eligible, but this brand doesn’t participate in Marriott Bonvoy.
You get The Edit benefits of $100 F&B credit + breakfast for 2. The Points Boost is at 2 cents per point.
Lisbon
Convent Square & InterContinental
Both of these IHG hotels are part of The Edit and eligible for IHG One Rewards benefits. The Convent Square hotel, however, is not Points Boost eligible, but the InterContinental is.
Until the end of October or until I have used up the points earned by then, the floor for these redemptions is 1.5 US cents each; however, it will be 1 cent in the future.
Conclusion
The apparent intention behind these The Edit credits, at $250 each and with a minimum 2-night stay requirement, is that you book a hotel costing $1,000 or more, and the credit is only partial.
If you, however, look carefully at markets with very high seasonality on rates, you can find some very nice properties with minimal out-of-pocket costs + you can also credit the stay and enjoy possible elite benefits with at least Marriott Bonvoy, Accor ALL, IHG, and GHA Discovery.
I didn’t find any Hilton or Hyatt properties that would have been loyalty program eligible based on my searches in ten or so cities.
You must pay attention, however, to which hotels are eligible for a hotel loyalty program and which are not, as well as which hotels qualify for the Points Boost (if you plan to use points).
This can make sense for chains where breakfast is not an elite member benefit (looking at Accor or some GHA brands), as you could now get it through The Edit combined with the $100 F&B credit.
Chase can change the value of these Points Boost, or remove or add hotels. What is available now might not be available tomorrow, or the cash or points price could be different.
