New 75k point welcome offer on Chase Sapphire Preferred card

As would be expected, the welcome offers for the revamped Chase Sapphire Reserve card and the new Sapphire Reserve for Business card got all the attention yesterday despite being somewhat disappointing versus what many of us were hoping for.

Those weren’t the only Chase cards that saw increased welcome offers though. In addition to the United Quest card getting a higher offer, the Sapphire Preferred welcome offer got bumped back up to 75,000 bonus points when spending $5,000 in the first three months from account opening.

Quick Thoughts

A few months ago, you could earn 100,000 bonus points as the welcome offer on the Sapphire Preferred card. This new 75,000 point offer is clearly not as good as that, but it is an improvement on the 60,000 points available over the past few weeks since the 100K offer ended.

There are probably quite a few people who’d gotten themselves under 5/24 and were holding off on applying for any new personal cards until they had a chance to see what the updated Sapphire Reserve card would look like and – just as importantly – what kind of welcome offer would come with it. If the thought of having to pay a $795 annual fee for a card that awards “only” 100K points as the welcome offer as we found out yesterday, earning 75K points for a $95 annual fee card might be more appealing, especially if you don’t think you’ll be able to get good value from the myriad of coupons on the Sapphire Reserve nowadays.

If you have a Sapphire Preferred already and want to refer your partner, you’ll earn 15,000 bonus points as the referrer, taking the household earnings to a total of 90,000 bonus points before accounting for points earned through making the minimum spend requirement.
