If there’s one complaint about Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” that comes up a lot on forums, it’s the casting of Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards.
While he hasn’t received the kind of nasty remarks his “The Last of Us” co-star Bella Ramsey has recently seen regarding her role in that HBO show, he’s still been the brunt of complaints from people who had others in mind for that part.
With casting news on the film quite public, it was well-known that the likes of Adam Driver, Jake Gyllenhaal, Matt Smith, Jamie Dornan and Christopher Abbott met or screentested prior to Pedro’s casting.
Speaking in a feature piece for Vanity Fair, the seemingly everywhere actor has acknowledged the detractors, saying he’s well aware of the online sentiment while discussing his excitement over what he’s seen of growing fan anticipation for the film:
“I’m getting an inkling of excitement because it seems to reflect what our common goal was, and what we want to share, which is all of our f—ing hearts on a platter within this genre. You just never know if people are going to be disgusted by your heart or not. I’m more aware of disgruntlement around my casting than anything I’ve ever done. He’s too old. He’s not right. He needs to shave.'”
Pascal says he had a major ally in MCU veteran Robert Downey Jr.: “He’s just so immediately generous and inviting that you feel like you can be afraid, you can be hungry, you can be ambivalent.”
In fact, after the interview he had a “homework” meeting at Downey’s house with the “Avengers: Doomsday” cast, presumably Downey gave a pep talk.
For the full interview, including some colorful yet thoughtful remarks about his public spat with J.K. Rowling, head over to Vanity Fair. “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is set to be released in cinemas on July 25th with the next major trailer release going online tomorrow.
