The idea of a tent for backpacking is entirely dependent on size and weight. Stargazing ability from within the tent, well, it’s an added advantage. But when it comes to camping with the family, priorities change. What matters is the space you can create in the outdoors for the family to spend time together. If you swear by the benefits of your truck camper, the James Baroud Family Room is where you should be headed. Yet, if you want more privacy without compromising space, welcome the Land Nest Shelter.
The brainchild of a Japanese manufacturer of outdoor living solutions, Snow Peak, the two-tent Land Nest Shelter is substantially bigger than anything created by the company before. Despite the size, it remains rooted in the maker’s design philosophy and the ideology of keeping things easy to use.
Designer: Snow Peak
Comprising water-repellent polyester taffeta roof and polyester Oxford body, the Land Nest Shelter’s main frame is designed for effortless assembly. The tent borrows the symmetrical layout and solitary frame structure from its predecessor, Land Nest Dome, which makes it straightforward to set up and uninstall. This convenience makes the tent ideal for beginners, as much as it is feature-packed and spacious for the seasoned adventurer.
It is fitting then for Snow Peak to call the Land Nest Shelter (its two-piece tent) an exceptional “outdoor living” solution. Measuring upward of 20 feet in length and close to 12 feet in width, the tent, with an interior height of 6 feet, is partitioned to be used in two configurations. With a zippered door separating the two spaces, you can choose to use them for living and sleeping, or when you desire, as two separate bedrooms.
Owing to its mammoth size, Land Nest Shelter does weigh more than its competition. With a total weight of 36.4 pounds (tent only), it is certainly not a choice for backpacking. By virtue of its construction, the new Snow Peak tent can fit in the boot of your car and take you on a family adventure of five (people you can conveniently fit in the vehicle) with maximum convenience. By standard, the tent is designed for four people, but depending on how comfortable you are sleeping next to each other, you can accommodate up to six people inside the two rooms of the tent.
When it’s just the two of you, the Land Nest Shelter permits you to remove its inner tent and create one spacious unit for yourself. Since the tent is designed to be your camping partner at least until the snow comes down, it has a skirt running around the entire base to keep the air from seeping in. It helps maintain coziness inside in colder weather, while a water-repellent finish keeps the water out even during a downpour. And when the sun is beating down hard on the camp, the tent’s ceiling, finished with darker pigment, helps block the sunlight to maintain the temperature inside. All this space and features come for a hefty price of $750.
