‘The Last of Us’ Season 3 Will Primarily Focus on Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby

One of the big additions to “The Last of Us” Season 2 was the arrival of Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, the character who of course brutally murders Joel in both the video game sequel and the television series. But we didn’t see much of Dever throughout the second season, with the character largely remaining off screen in the wake of Pedro Pascal’s gruesome demise.

The final moments of the second season, however, suggested that Abby will be taking center stage in “The Last of Us” Season 3, and indeed it sounds like the upcoming season will primarily tell Abby’s side to the story. It’s the same approach taken by the video game The Last of Us Part II, which the HBO series is adapting across at least two seasons of television.

Creator Neil Druckmann teased during an Emmys For Your Consideration event this week (via THR), “I can’t believe that [HBO] let us structure the series in this way. Meaning like we just ended season two, and season three is going to be starring — spoiler alert — Kaitlyn. I was sure that they wouldn’t let us do this when we started adapting this, but they’ve leaned into what makes, I believe, the story special. And allowed us not only the time but the creative freedom to be able to take these swings, and I think the audience really appreciates that.”

The idea is that the HBO series will reinvent itself with each new season, with the first season focused on Joel and Ellie, the second on Ellie and Dina, and the third on Abby and Ellie.

“The Last of Us” Season 3 will show us what Abby was up to while Ellie was hunting her down in Seattle. “Abby is the hero of her story,” series co-creator Craig Mazin recently noted.
