“Avatar” and “Titanic” filmmaker James Cameron has announced that his company, Lightstorm, has purchased the screen rights to acclaimed novelist and film editor Joe Abercrombie’s latest book “The Devils”.
In addition, Abercrombie will co-write the script with Cameron. Abercrombie is best known for his fantasy book trilogies “The First Law” and “Age of Madness” and recently contributed to the fourth season of the Netflix animated anthology series “Love, Death & Robots”.
Not to be confused with the infamous and legendary 1970s Ken Russell film of the same name, “The Devils” was published May 6th and is described as a dark fantasy epic about a special force of monsters enlisted to save Europe from a scourge of flesh-eating elves. In a statement, Cameron says:
I’ve loved Joe’s writing for years, cherishing each new read, throughout the epic cycle of the First Law books, especially Best Served Cold (LOVE IT!) and the Age of Madness trilogy. But the freshness of the world and the characters in The Devils finally got me off my butt to buy one of his books and partner with him to bring it to the screen.
I’m looking forward to the writing process with him, though I’m certain this adaptation will practically write itself because Joe writes very visually, almost in scenes, and with a very cinematic structure. I can’t wait to dig into this as I wind down on Avatar: Fire and Ash. It will be a joyful new challenge for me to bring these indelible characters to life.”
This follows on from Cameron acquiring the rights to author Charles Pellegrino’s book “Ghosts of Hiroshima” last year, that project focusing on the story of the atomic bomb from the Japanese perspective.
