While Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise has seen a massive surge in popularity in the past few years (thanks to consistently solid remakes and new entries), one sticking point has always turned some fans away from specific titles: the camera mode. Now we finally know how Resident Evil Requiem will play, and RE9 fans of all preferences will be happy.
For a franchise that’s about to celebrate its 30th anniversary, there are a lot of details we could dig into, but to keep it brief, here’s a general overview of how each of the mainline games handled their in-game camera:
- The original Resident Evil, as well as Resident Evil 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, are third-person games exclusively, and that also includes the modern remakes. While some of these titles can be played in first-person, that can only be done through modding on a PC
- Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is exclusively a first-person title, though PC players can install mods to allow for an over-the-shoulder camera
- Resident Evil Village originally launched with a first-person camera, but a post-launch update allowed players to switch to a third-person view

What is the camera perspective in Resident Evil Requiem?
When Resident Evil Requiem was shown off during last week’s Summer Game Fest showcase, it wasn’t entirely clear whether it would stick with the first-person view seen in more recent entries or whether it would hearken back to the series’ roots. While Capcom has not shown off gameplay to the public (so far, that is), we did get to see a behind-closed-doors presentation at SGF Play Days, and can confirm that Resident Evil Requiem allows players to freely switch between first and third-person cameras.
Interestingly, regardless of what option you pick, Requiem features a minimal user interface; during the aforementioned presentation, we noticed how there were no icons or HUDs to display your health, equipped weapons, or items. Instead, button prompts would appear if you could interact with a nearby object, and… that’s about it. We can’t confirm whether or not the UI we were shown is final, but its Spartan nature makes sense once you consider how players can change to a first or third-person camera at will.
With any luck, Capcom will show off more of Resident Evil Requiem ahead of its February 27, 2026 launch.
