BagID is transforming the travel experience by making checked luggage smarter, more seamless, and stress-free. CEO Ina Eldøy explains how innovative partnerships and technology are shaping the future of baggage.

“Hiccups related to baggage in aviation are an emotional, trip-changing experience,” Eldøy begins. “In 2025 we are still handling baggage like in the 1980s, not having enabled new technology to make the journey easier, seamless and more cost-effective for passengers, airlines, handlers and airports. BagID’s vison is to change the way people fly with checked luggage. We do this by making bags smarter, the passenger journey stress-free, seamless and paperless, and enabling airports and airlines to reduce costs and increase passenger satisfaction. Our electronic bag tags with tracking are part of this solution. Our software development of a collaborative decision-making platform for Aena is another. Our strength is collaboration and partnerships – if we want to change a global standard, we need to do this together!”
Indeed, as a Gold Sponsor of APEX FTE EMEA and Ancillary & Retailing, BagID would like to talk about the big picture and not about its product. “Changing the way we fly with checked bags involves the entire industry – therefore the industry will have to find better ways of doing things together,” says Eldøy. “We are bringing with us our partner Aena, as they live our belief in working together across airlines, airports and suppliers.”
BagID’s partnerships with Apple and Samsung are of high value as they underline the quality of its electronic bag tag solution. “Partnering up with strong global brands is vital for a small growth company like BagID,” Eldøy explains. “The BagID 2 for Apple is integrated with Apple’s Find My network, and the Samsung version works with Samsung’s SmartThings Find. BagID leverages IoT technologies to ensure seamless, real-time baggage tracking through a combination of smart hardware, cloud services, and integration with airline systems.”
BagID devices are equipped with:
- Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE): enables communication with nearby smartphones or airport infrastructure.
- E-Paper Display: displays digital bag tags synced with airline systems.
- Battery-efficient microcontroller: ensures long-lasting performance without frequent charging.
“Moving forward we will also have activated RFID, use data from airport infrastructure for tracking updates and ensure visibility across the journey – from check-in to loading to transit to arrival,” says Eldøy.
BagID gives the passenger full control and visibility throughout the journey, by utilising the Apple and Samsung tracking networks. For airlines and airports, off-airport check-in of bags by the passenger increases travel readiness when they arrive at the airport, reduces queues and improves passenger flows. In addition, it reduces transactional costs related to baggage. “During our pilot with Aena, we also saw that passengers travelling with EBTs spent a lot more money airside than other passengers – all in all, win, win, win,” Eldøy shares.
Looking ahead, BagID is currently starting the development of its BagID 3.0 – the electronic bag tag with tracking for all. “We are looking at our customers’ experiences so far, what needs to be improved, what new tech is out there, how can we make it available for all, independent of operative system and smartphone brand,” Eldøy explains. “If we want mass adoption, the functionality and price must be right, for passengers and airlines.”
Electronic bag tags with tracking will enable the collection of much more data along the baggage journey. Eldøy adds that BagID will be using AI-based models for prediction and other analytics. “Generative AI will be important to generate real-time trouble shooting for passengers and employees enabling all stakeholders to be one step ahead, rather than the too often ‘one step behind’ of today. Think about it as a virtual work and travel companion, giving you real-time updates and a better journey altogether.”
