Josh Greenbaum (“Will & Harper,” “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar”) has reportedly been set to direct a movie based on the early 1980s cartoon “Care Bears” which is currently in early development at Warner Bros. Pictures.
No writer has yet been announced and plot or character specifics are under wraps. Chris Bender, Jake Weiner, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley will produce.
Created by Elena Kucharik and Linda Denham, the multi-colored bears are friendly creatures with unique images on their bellies that reflect their personalities.
The franchise got its start first as greeting cards before becoming a TV series from 1985-1988 and multiple films starting with “The Care Bears Movie” back in 1985. A revival TV series launched in 2012 with the current “Care Bears: Unlock the Magic” series debuting in 2019.
To this day it’s a major revenue earner, pulling in $470 million in global retail sales in 2024 and over $10 billion in lifetime retail sales.
Greenbaum is currently in post-production on the pickleball movie “The Dink” starring Ben Stiller and Jake Johnson, and remains attached to the “Spaceballs” sequel film at Amazon MGM Studios.
