James Gunn says he’s not concerned with some talk of ‘too many characters’ in his new Superman film. Superman is almost upon us, arriving on July 11 and promoting the film director and co-head of DC studios James Gunn spoke to Esquire Philippines, via Variety.
He was asked if having so many characters would be confusing for audiences?
“No, not really, because I’ve screened the movie for so many people and saw that people aren’t confused,” Gunn said. “So I know from fact that it’s not confusing.”
“We’re used to seeing movies with protagonists and Superman is definitely the protagonist of Superman, and he has his work friends and he has his play friends,” Gunn explained. “Now, I don’t know if the Justice Gang are his play friends or if his work friends at the Daily Planet are his work friends or his play friends, but that’s the two groups of his friends from different places. And just because they have insignias on their costumes or superpowers doesn’t mean they’re not like any other supporting character in any movie.”
“I think ‘Oppenheimer’ has three times as many speaking roles as we do. So I think people are fine.”

To be fair, Oppenheimer is a different demographic of movie goer than Superman. However, I agree with Gunn completely. I think the fact so many of the background characters are known DC characters is throwing people a little. Not every character in the ensemble needs to be developed much within the film. If the focus is mostly on Superman and Luthor, then everyone else is just there as background.
So, James Gunn says he’s not concerned with some talk of ‘too many characters’ in his new Superman film. What do you think, are you? Thoughts below.
