Singapore Airlines is making changes to its KrisFlyer program on July 1, 2025, that unify the value of miles when used dynamically towards various services (read more here).
There is a one-liner in the email that I missed at first that is giving me bad vibes about what we will soon learn.
You can access Singapore Airlines here.
One Line on the SQ’s Email:
In the coming months, we will be introducing new benefits for KrisFlyer members as well as changes to the KrisFlyer programme.
My question is?
Has any of these frequent spender programs, previously frequent flier, ever introduced benefits or changes that would have been beneficial to us?
At least, I cannot remember any, having followed and covered them since the early 2000s.
What do I believe will happen?
It is certain that adjustments will be made to the award charts, as Singapore Airlines hasn’t touched them in a few years.
When airlines touch these charts, don’t we all know the direction? The question is, are the mileage requirements going only up or WAY UP?
What could happen?
Do you think that Singapore Airlines could follow the lead of North American and European airlines and adopt an entirely cash-based program, where status and award miles are tied solely to the price paid for tickets?
This is entirely possible, and I don’t think it would make the program any worse, as it hasn’t been competitive to begin with compared to other Star Alliance programs.
What should you do NOW?
If you have KrisFlyer miles sitting in your account, like I do, or you are planning to redeem for flights on Singapore Airlines, it would be the best to be ahead of this announcement and firm up those awards NOW before everyone panics and tries to grab the quickly diminishing inventory before the miles are worth much less.
Conclusion
It is at least good that Singapore Airlines hinted about these upcoming “enhancements” in its program BEFORE they are announced.
I cannot get my head around how awful the program is for crediting flights, but it’s not bad if you merely transfer some convertible points for redemption purposes.
I don’t think that I have credited there any other flights besides the SilkAir ones before they brought the airline under the SQ umbrella.
So, if you have KrisFlyer miles sitting in your account, now is the perfect time to plan how you’ll use them all.
